Why 3D?
« on: July 17, 2008, 04:15:22 AM »

I guess you could call it curiosity, but I would like to know what prompted everyone get into 3D art.  Not only the Staff here, but the members that post their fine works here.  I thought it might be a way to break the ice and think it would be a great way to welcome new visitors here.
I guess since I asked I will break the ice and start it off.
Hi, my posting name is Masterchief and I started out working with Poser 6 in 2006 in an effort to find something to occupy my time while working in Iraq.  I had watched a friend mess with it and Bryce, and after playing around with both settled on Poser for the ease of use.  Up to this point I had never done anything remotely art related.
After finding Renderosity and their freebie section I really started to get into it.  I found this site by accident one day after seeing some of Nemain's work, I realized that there was a whole different side of 3D, and my fetish renders really started to take over my art.  I hope to one day be good enough for someone to say "Hey I have seen your stuff, it is really good"
I am always looking for comments both good and bad, it tells me where I need to improve.
Well that is about it, I hope that all of you take the time to stop by and post here, I think we have a great site to post on and I would like to see it grow.

The devil made me do it. Well, at least his deputy on earth: Nemain  Wink Grin

I was always fascinated by computer generated art. In the late 1990's, I got my hands on a cheap copy of an 3D modeller & renderer, but my PC wasn't strong enough for this type of software. It took half of a day and a night and half of a day again to render something and so I stopped playing with it.

Then I met Nemain. She introduced - or better, pushed - me into the 3D thing again. She asked me things about Poser, I couldn't answer. I had to get Poser myself and it began, again. First I created some fantasy related images, but soon enough I realised, that Poser, that I could do more.

When DAZ released Hexagon2, I immediately bought it. It wasn't easy at first, but the more I worked with Hex2 (and the less it crashed Wink ), the better I got. Well, I hope I got better.  Roll Eyes

Me a devil???
Sweetie, we need to talk... Wink

Well, I came to 3D art in 2002, when Angus and I started Vampire-roleplaying. We needed avatars for our website and I didn't want to take pictures by famous
artists like most do, unfortunately.
Someone told me about Poser and I thought why not giving it a try, soon I played with Poser 4. As Angus mentioned I asked him tons of questions and he started with
it too.
I did the usual fantasy stuff with freebies I got from Renderosity, then I found a link to Renderotica and saw what others do with Poser and was astonished.
"Poser figures having sex?" Interesting, but not really what I was looking for.
Then I found Jamie Cordell, his fetish works finally showed me, what my heart wanted to render. Jamie's shiny and sexy renders inspired me and I can say he is the
one who brought me to fetish renders, my muse  Grin
After some time I developed my own style, at least some people say they would recognize my images amongst others.

Still shiny images are my favourite, but I like to do fantasy and sci-fi too, from time to time.

Nemain and Angus, thank you for sharing with us.  I know what you are saying about Jamie Cordell, the first items I bought for poser was his stuff.
Wow, I thought this would go over better than it has, maybe it will pick up steam, I hope, hey you out there...Yes you, the person with the mouse in your hand.  Hit the reply button and tell us why you go into 3d art.  I promise we won't laugh or point at you. Smiley

Well, you know we do dirty stuff in the eyes of the most people.
And some think we don't do art, because we just play with digital barbie dolls.
So don't expect too many replies.

WOW!  You weren't kidding Nemain, I thought at least some of those here would post a reply here to this.  I was hoping to get a better dialog going between all of the artists here, I guess I didn't do so well, huh?  Huh  Oh well,  Since you are here reading this let me ask you, How do you get your latex to have such a depth of field?  Are you using raytracing or do you use a reflect map?  Your checks and polka dots always look like you could fall into them, they are absolutely stunning!  And you are right, my wife doesn't quite understand why I do the fetish art or 3D for that matter, but she is nice enough to to look at the images and tells me what she thinks.

 Wink
I use reflects, for better results I render with firefly. The P4 engine doesn't do very well with reflections.
The Polkadots I used for my last image will be released soon.

I have a question for you Nemain and whoever else may be lurking here, What is your Muse?  Do you start out with something in mind, or do you just start throwing things together and when you see something that you like work from there?  I am finding that sometimes I start out with an image inmind but other times I start out with a figure and then just start adding and subtracting things until I find something that catches my fancy and I work from there to end up with a finished picture.  Also how do you deal with a lack of insperation?  Every once in a while I hit a spell where I can't get anything to work and I wind up shutting Poser down for a few days to a week at a time.

Usually I just have a vague idea , I found out, that with a complex idea in mind, I never come to a satisfying result.
I know what genre I want to render, for example a fantasy scene and then I start with it Smiley
Roaming through my libraries, hunting for the needed items, creating textures when I need something unique.
If a small item is missing, I ask Angus if he could create it for me Wink

Thank you for the insight Nemain.  I have noticed that when i try to force an image I end up with nothing more than frustration, but when I just mess around and then find a hint of inspiration my work is more natural and enjoyable as well as fulfilling.

I got into Poser for a couple of different reason. First I've always been fascinated with computer generated graphics. I particularly like the early surrealistic stuff.

Secondly I'm into Role-Playing Games and I wanted to do character pictures. Since my drawing skills are mediocre I found Poser and ran with it.

Recently I've been working on my own on-line comic book, another long time dream of mine is to create comic books but I never had enough skill to draw them by hand.

Its great to see you here Alric.  I have seen a forum post at a different website asking if 3D should be considered art, and I believe that it is.  It doesn't matter that we use prebuilt parts we are still putting the parts together to make a picture.  I look forward to seeing your work here and I would like to take a look at your comic if you are willing to share.
Thanks for posting on this thread too!

Ok, ok...I'll pick up the gauntlet to run with on this subject. ( and slap you on the butt with it too if you're not carefull. he he )

Hi there, I'm n1ghtmother ( nightmother on many other sites)
... I've been into the 3d scene now for around 2 years, although it doesn't show. lol
I'm more of an admirer of the 3d scene than an artist, and i just love to give those artists a great moral boost about their work, as i feel that the 3d community is very overlooked and the exceptional artists out there just plain aren't getting the recognition they deserve.
So i class myself as a bouncy one woman cheering squad. LOL

I firstly got into the 3d scene with a programme by Reallusion named Iclone.... Putting it mildly, after modding a forum based on it, playing with it, and tweaking it, i figured that the programme sucks b*lls, and just knew that there had to be something better out there.
Thats when my ex found and introduced me to Poser 7.
Since then I've had a love/hate relationship with it, my memory is lousy and this leads to mega frustration with the programme. LOL ( hence why I'm a chatter and supporter.)

The people I've met, and the exquisite art ( YES it IS art!! ) I've seen here and on other forums/ communities makes my heart soar.

And i just have to say Nemain and Angus, that not only do you have an amazing site here, but your artworks, models, and attitude are exemplary and a real boost to the rest of us.
( my love of all things fetish doesn't make me biased does it? *giggles* )

Keep it up guys n gals!!

So there you go ... good enough MC?  Grin

* hugs n luvs*
